Cruising in Corsica

Corsica is 183 km long and 83 km wide, with 1,000 km of coastline. The island has 6 nature reserves covering nearly 83,500 hectares. Charters focus on Ajaccio and the west coast, as well as Cap Corse to the north.

Calvi lies 98 nm from Cannes. On a displacement yacht, the crossing can be made overnight with a morning arrival. Starting from Cannes gives access to a wider choice of yachts than the Corsican ports. Ajaccio, Calvi and Bonifacio are the usual ports for guests who prefer to board on the island.

In the south, northern Sardinia is a short passage from Bonifacio. The Lavezzi Islands lie 9 nm from the La Maddalena archipelago. Some itineraries start in Cannes and end in Olbia or Porto Cervo.

Where to go

  • Calvi

Calvi is often the first port of call after the crossing from Cannes. Below the citadel, a long beach lines the bay.

  • Gulf of Porto, Scandola and Girolata

The Gulf of Porto, Girolata, Scandola and the Calanche de Piana together form a single UNESCO World Heritage Site. At Scandola, the islets and sea caves are home to rich marine life. Ospreys nest on the rock pinnacles above.

  • Bonifacio

Bonifacio looks out to sea from limestone cliffs 68 metres high. Cavallo lies 7 nm from the harbour.

  • Lavezzi Islands and the Strait of Bonifacio

The Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve covers 79,460 hectares. The Lavezzi Islands lie 9 nm from the La Maddalena archipelago in Sardinia. In the strait, the captain selects an anchorage suited to the day's wind.

  • Agriate, Saleccia and Lotu

The beaches of Saleccia and Lotu lie within the Cap Corse and Agriate Marine Nature Park. They are among the most popular stops for yachts in summer.

The libeccio, a south-westerly wind, occasionally reaches the west coast. The mistral can be felt in the north, and the Strait of Bonifacio funnels the wind.
