Cruising in Sardinia

La Maddalena Archipelago National Park covers 180 km of coastline and more than 60 islands of granite and schist. The bottlenose dolphin is the most common cetacean here. The Spargiotello and Washington shoals draw divers.

The Costa Smeralda was transformed in the 1960s under the guidance of Prince Karim Aga Khan. Porto Cervo is now home to the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The marinas of Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo and Portisco welcome yachts along this coast. To the north, Bonifacio in Corsica lies 7 nm from the northern tip of Sardinia.

Where to go

  • Porto Cervo

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is based in Porto Cervo and runs a superyacht regatta.

  • Spargi

Cala Corsara and Cala Granara on Spargi have soft white sand and shallow, clear water. These 2 coves in the La Maddalena archipelago are well suited to a swim from the yacht.

  • Caprera

Garibaldi spent the last 26 years of his life on Caprera, and his house is open to visitors. Cala Coticcio and Cala Portese are 2 coves on Caprera.

  • Budelli and the Spiaggia Rosa

The Spiaggia Rosa owes its pink colour to the shells of a red foraminiferan.

  • Tavolara

Tavolara is an island of limestone and granite. It rises to 560 metres and stretches for 4 km, at the centre of a marine protected area.

  • Cala Goloritzè

Further south, Cala Goloritzè lies in the Gulf of Orosei on the east coast. The cove has been recognised as an Italian national monument since 1995. Guests view it from the sea, without landing.

Frequently asked questions

Ask another question

When is the best time for a Sardinia yacht charter?

The season runs from May to September and peaks in July and August. May, June and September bring mild temperatures and a quieter pace. April and October also suit guests who prefer a calmer atmosphere.

Can we sail to Sardinia from Cannes?

Yes. Porto Cervo lies 217 nm from Cannes. Some itineraries also link the French Riviera, Corsica and Sardinia, starting with an overnight passage to Corsica.

Can we combine Sardinia and Corsica?

Yes. Bonifacio lies 7 nm from the northern tip of Sardinia, so one charter can link the La Maddalena archipelago with southern Corsica. To enjoy both islands properly, we recommend more than a week.

Where do charters start in Sardinia?

The marinas of Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo and Portisco welcome yachts on the Costa Smeralda. The itinerary on this page starts in Cannigione, 8 nm from Porto Cervo.

Which airport should we fly into?

In the north-east, Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport serves the Costa Smeralda and its marinas. For a charter in the south of Sardinia, Cagliari Elmas is the largest airport on the island.
