Cruising the French Riviera

A French Riviera charter usually begins in Monaco, Nice, Cannes or Antibes. Heading west, the route runs past the red rocks of the Estérel to Saint-Tropez and the Îles d'Hyères. Heading east, it leads to Monaco and can continue to the Italian Riviera.

Passages between ports are short. From Cannes, Saint-Tropez is 25 nm away and Monaco 28 nm. A day can combine an authorised anchorage off Pampelonne with an evening in Saint-Tropez's old harbour. Port Pierre Canto faces the Lérins Islands, which can be the first stop on embarkation day.

Porquerolles and Port-Cros are part of a national park with unspoilt coastlines. From Saint-Tropez, yachts reach them across the Gulf of Hyères. The Mistral occasionally reaches the western stretch of the coast.

Where to go

  • Îles de Lérins

This archipelago of 4 islands lies just off Cannes. On Sainte-Marguerite, the Fort Royal museum includes the cell of the Man in the Iron Mask. On Saint-Honorat, the abbey's monks tend an 8.5-hectare vineyard.

  • The Estérel

In the Estérel massif, volcanic rhyolite gives the coastline a striking red colour. Yachts pass these red rocks on the way between Saint-Tropez and Cannes.

  • Saint-Tropez and Pampelonne

Saint-Tropez lies 25 nm from Cannes. Pampelonne Beach at Ramatuelle stretches for 4.5 km and is classified as a remarkable natural area. Yachts anchor in an authorised area offshore before an evening in the old harbour.

  • Îles d'Hyères

Porquerolles and Port-Cros are part of a national park with unspoilt coastlines. From Saint-Tropez, yachts cross the Gulf of Hyères. The captain then selects an anchorage in line with the park's rules.

  • Villefranche-sur-Mer and Beaulieu

Yachts call at Villefranche-sur-Mer and then Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the way to Monaco. Excursions ashore lead to the village of Èze or to Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

  • Monaco

Monaco lies 28 nm from Cannes. Port Hercule lies in a natural bay at the foot of the Rock.
